New Scheme for West Hill School

Work has started on a £500,00 new build technology block for West Hill School in Stalybridge. Staff and students joined representatives from the governors and Clement Dickens for a traditional sod cutting ceremony at the Tameside school.

The Fylde Coast contractor has been appointed to deliver the new two storey building, which is scheduled for completion by April 2013. The new facility will house a state-of-the-art technology laboratory and general classroom space, and will replace the existing temporary classrooms.

West Hill is an all boys comprehensive with specialist science status. Funding for the development was secured by the governors from the Education Funding Agency. Mr Fildes, chairman of the governors, said: “We are delighted at the prospect of a new building on the school site which will enrich the educational experience of our students.”

Getting started on Lytham eco offices

Work has started on the second phase of a commercial development in Lytham. Melton Grove Works is a development of high quality office and studio space. The second phase is adjacent to the original ‘sawmill’ for which Clement Dickens previously carried out extensive refurbishment works on behalf of architects Firth Associates. This second phase of the project, set for completion early 2013, will see the construction of a new build 4500 sq ft unit. With thermally efficient walls achieving u value of 0.14 and a sustainable heating and cooling system, the eco-designed building promises reduced energy bills for occupiers.

Joel Firth designed and commissioned the project. He said: “This will be a highly efficient, super-insulated structure that integrates sustainable building materials and technical systems to make this the most environmentally conscious office development in the area.

“The appointment of Clements Dickens to this second phase of the project is down to the excellent job the team did with the refurbishment of the ‘sawmill’.

“The foundations have been dug and the build is well under way and I’m delighted that we’re even ahead of schedule which is good news, as there’s already been significant interest in the space and we’ve already signed up our first pre let.”

Completion of a commercial build for Whitworth Pharmacy on Waterloo Road in Blackpool has seen the regeneration of a former garage site, providing a new amenity for local residents. The project involved conversion of an existing garage forecourt and building, along with a a new drive-thru facility and associated external works.

Improvements to the historic Cartford Inn at Little Eccleston saw Clement Dickens complete extensions and alterations to the existing property to form additional bedrooms, an enlarged dining area and a new kitchen. External works employed traditional craftsmanship to help maintain the heritage appearance of this popular venue.

Working Well Together

Keeping health and safety at the top of the agenda, managing director Ross Dickens has been appointed vice chair of Lancashire Working Well Together, an initiative to promote and encourage best practice throughout the industry.

Made up of representatives from construction companies across the county, and backed by the Health and Safety Executive, Lancashire Working Well Together meets regularly to share information to members through a series of seminars.

Keen to encourage more people to get involved, Ross said: “Anyone working in the construction industry is aware of the risks and responsibilities the job brings. Working Well Together’s free events help to raise awareness of the issues facing our industry and gives particiants practical advice on how to deal with risk. Whether you’re self employed or part of a bigger orgainsation, we all need to keep up-to-date with the latest legislation and practices. I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t been before to come along and see how they could benefit from the knowledge and experience of colleagues in the industry.”

The next event is a half-day session on November 14th at Park Hall Hotel in Charnock Rochard. Places are free but limited so booking is essential. Grub’s up for college project

Dinner will be served on time following the handover of a new kitchen and dining area for students at Blackpool and the Fylde College Bispham Campus. The £250,000 project was completed over five weeks during the summer holiday period to ensure minimal disruption to the college.

Clement Dickens stripped out the existing fixtures and fittings to enable the rewiring and plumbing of the new kitchen, service area and dining space.
